Saarland – Schlemmerland
As they say in the Saarland 'Hauptsach gudd gess!'. In other words: 'The most important thing is good food'. This saying represents a traditional and very Saarland pearl of wisdom.

A taste of enjoyable life in Saarland is provided by the refined savoury dishes, selected local products and, of course, the star chefs who ensure the Saarland as a region of gourmets. Also, as far as Saarland beverages are concerned - from water and juices via wines to the beers of local breweries - the high quality of the Saarland shines through.

Gourmet heaven full of stars.

Several star chefs ensure the Saarland has the reputation of a gourmet region. In hardly any other region can you find so many geniuses at the stove and gourmets at the table in such a small area: Klaus Erfort and Jens Jakob in Saarbrücken, Christian Bau in Perl, Alexander Kunz in St. Wendel-Bliesen and Cliff Hämmerle in Blieskastel. As the food-critic Wolfram Siebeck once enthused, Saarland is a culinary landscape in which you can find excellent quality even in small venues, something for which you would have to search a long time in Paris.

Beloved, hearty home cooking

Beloved, hearty home cooking

The cuisine of the Saarland is varied and in addition to culinary sophistication offers hearty home cooking.

'Dibbelabbes', 'Schwenker' and 'Lyoner' are just some of the specialities that are especially popular. In addition to home cooked dishes, the local cuisine offers quality manufactured products such as meat and sausage products from Schamm, Kunzler and Schröder, mustard from Amora and vinegar from Melfor as well as specialities from Eppers, which add spice to the region.

Gefillde? You must try it

‘Gefillde’ is a mixture of grated and pressed boiled potatoes, seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg and filled with fried or liver sausage. It is accompanied by either a creamy bacon sauce or sauerkraut. This Saarland speciality is also served at village and town festivals.

And what is there to drink?

And what is there to drink?

How about the internationally famous brands from the Karlsberg Brewery, the beers of the small, private breweries Bruch und Großwald or a Hausbräu? As for the amber nectar, the Saarland is unanimous: brewed with passion, diversity and fantasy – and, of course, in line with the German Beer Purity Law and always to an exceptional quality. And, as far as wine is concerned, connoisseurs quickly go into raptures. Award-winning wines from the Saar and the Saarland Moselle enjoy a worldwide reputation and are the wines of preference in local wine cellars. Local juices, mineral waters and Viez, for example, from the Merziger orchards, complete the alcohol-free drinks on offer.
