Trip to the ‘Tuscany of the Saarland’

You want to get to know one of the most beautiful landscapes in Germany? Then let’s go to the Bliesgau. With its species-rich meadow types and extensive beech forests, the UNESCO biosphere reserve is often described as the ‘Tuscany’ of the Saarland.

Out into the great outdoors, recharge, and leave the stress of everyday life behind you. With its varied landscapes and vast forests the Saarland attracts health-conscious people from all over.

Around one third of the region is covered with mixed deciduous forest. For the smallest region, this represents a significant proportion of the total forest area of the Federal Republic. A hiking highlight is the Saar-Hunsrück trail, which was voted the most beautiful trail in Germany in 2009. It lies in the large Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, which at more than 2,000 square kilometres is not only one of the ten largest natural parks in Germany, but also one of the most species-rich.

Nature can be just as good an experience in local cultural landscapes that have been created only through the intervention of man. Evidence of this is the 2,000-year-old wine culture in the Mosel, Saar, Ruwer and Nahe. This cultural heritage also includes Viez (cider), which is fermented here, as well as various fine fruit brandies, mineral water from the depths of the high forest and home-brewed beers that come from this region. These are served with dishes from the region, prepared according to traditional recipes, which also reveal their origin.

What you mustn't miss by any means, is the emblem of the region - the Saarschleife. This unique natural wonder was created by the power of water and can be explored by bicycle, on foot, by pleasure boat or in your own craft. You get the best view from the 'Cloef' viewpoint in Orscholz.

The Blies valley is best explored from the Bliesgau leisure trail. The 16-kilometre route has a magic attraction for skaters, bikers and hikers.
