Margarita Zemljakov (49)

Registered nurse

„Lass or lad? I will never forget my first contact with the neighbours“ Via the frozen wastes of Siberia and a stopover in Brandenburg I finally reached my destination in Dillingen. My first encounter with the people of Dillinger was confusing: a simple question was a huge challenge for me. My dear neighbour just wanted to know in his warm, open manner something about my children. Unfortunately 15 years ago I couldn't answer the question - despite having attended a German language course. At that time the Saarland dialect was like a foreign language for me. Today it sounds like home.

Get up and get ready for the morning shift at the Saarlouis hospital. I look forward to my patients and my duties. Thanks to the cooperation of colleagues it did not take me long to find my feet here. Everyone respected me from the beginning. Belonging to other cultures here is not a problem.

Start of shift in surgery. Here you get to know lots of different people and their backgrounds. At first mine was not always easy. Today I am very glad that my Russian qualification has ensured I am recognised as a registered nurse. The competent authority has helped me in this respect. Even though I still had to pass an adaptation training course and an oral exam - after a few years as a nursing assistant I can now officially work as a registered nurse.

Time for a short breather. The work is exhausting, but I like to take responsibility for others. I plan to do further studying in the future in order to achieve even more in my profession.

And where are you needed? And where are you needed?

End of shift. Now there is still time and energy for my hobby - my two grandchildren, six-year Edward and three-year old Maria. When the weather is fine and sunny we sometimes go to Orscholz to look at the Saarschleife. It's one of my favourite places in the Saarland.

Dinner with the grandchildren. Potato salad and Schenker steak is my husband's favourite dish - and the children love it as well.

After dinner we have a moment to plan our free time. We want to go on our next trip at the weekend. I hope to take the grandchildren to Metz and Nancy or spend an afternoon walking around the old city of Luxembourg.

Edward and Maria have just been picked up. Now there's just time to round off the day with my husband. When I think about my life, I am very proud. The decision to move to Germany and to come here to the Saarland, has paid off for us!
